Business Analysis vs. Systems Analysis Roles and Titles

What I found over the past few years is the title of Systems Analyst has morphed into a number of different roles with varying responsibilities.    I recently left JC Penney where I was initially hired as a Business Analyst, but I quickly found that JCP actually meant SA/BA/PM depending upon who hired you and how long they had been around.

Only a few companies I have run into have a clear separation between the role of SA and BA.  It's interesting how the title changes, but the job remains essentially the same.  I worked on contract at TI around the time TI/Raytheon separated and at that time they type of work I do now as a business analyst was then called Systems Analysis.  Looking over my own career I came to the realization that what I did over the past 18 years was now referred to as Business Analysis work.

I have found it extremely hard to get attention from recruiters unless I title my resume and jobs the way they are searching for them on the boards.  Incorrectly titled, they seem to be overlooked even though I or you would be a perfect candidate for a specific position.  I have to tell myself that the gatekeeper (recruiter) is not necessarily a technical person who can read through  a resume and be able to make the mental jump that what the employer is asking for is one thing unless the specific words are there.  Don't get me wrong, many recruiters I have worked with are sharp as a tack, but there are many who are not.
